"There is how we were before, and how we are now, and the time between is spent choosing which doors to open, and which to close." Yes, this is the essence of two families' stories, lives in which choices were made that have shadowed years upon years right up to today. For Eleanor Murray it is her vivacious, adventurous personality that called her to issue a dare to her sister with life-changing, tragic results. However, a larger choice is truly what has since affected the relationship between the two sisters, the choice to live riddled with guilt and shame rather than freedom and progress. Eve, Eleanor's sister, marries Glen to whom Eleanor was once attracted and they are only now learning to live for the future. At the same time it is Eleanor's boss, Finn Beaufain, who hires her as a companion to his Aunt Helen and trusts her with his fragile, brave and wise young daughter. They all soon get to know each other much more deeply, learning of dreams unrealized, of musical talent stymied by grief, of beautiful art holding past secrets with historical and personal significance defying words, of trust betrayed and lost or restored, and of love's possibilities.
Three sisters have beautiful voices in WWII Hungary. Due to German occupation, they are forced to flee their beloved homeland. How will they fare, when one has fallen in love with a German soldier and one a Jewish resistance fighter? And why does the remaining sister hold such bitterness and self-loathing because of that past and how it led to her present dread. What is it about Eleanor, Helen's companion, that reminds her so much of the past? What is it that recognizes a parallel story, one that she uses to push Eleanor into a future free of burdens?
An accident is just that, isn't it? A secret kept to protect a beloved sister is hidden for a noble purpose, isn't it? How important is it to forgive another person and one's self as well? And even more precious is the question of how can a precious home on the beautiful island of Edisto, South Carolina be a tender, powerful healing factor in the lives of multiple people? Will nature work its divine magic on those who have eyes to see, ears to hear and senses that need touching? Are these souls open just enough to allow the salve of nature's beauty to mend ailing hearts and spirits?
The Time Between: A Novel is a beautiful, poignant story that one doesn't want to end. Karen White's deft manipulation of a complex plot is clearly matured in this story that is even better than her previous novels. A story that is so painful is here crafted and presented with exquisite beauty and sensitivity that is a joy to read and experience. This is a MUST read as it is indeed superb fiction!

The Time Between Karen White 9780451239860 Books Reviews
Ms. White is a master storyteller who managed to engage this reader throughout. Eleanor, (Ellie) the young woman who'd gotten so far off track with her life, and Helena, the octogenarian, both with bitter secrets and haunted by something in their past, manage to develop an unlikely friendship. The slow build romance between Finn and Eleanor was lovely and they both deserved to find someone they could trust. Fragile Gigi lit up the room with her survivor's optimism. The theme of the special bond between sisters, Helena with Magda and Bernadette, and especially between Ellie and Eve, was uplifting, and I was glad when Eve spoke truth to Ellie so she could finally move on from her holding pattern. I'm never disappointed when I read a South Carolina set story from Karen White.
WOW! What an extraordinary, heart warming, endearing family love story spanning almost 100 years. I hated for this wonderful story to end. The love between sisters was so loving, strong and intense.......they truly "felt" each other. Although I have to say I love my romantic, alpha e-books and read a lot of them, it feels so incredibly wonderful to read an exceptionally and beautifully written novel such as THE TIME WITHIN. It sure makes you appreciate a true writer and author. (Sorry ebooks). Karen White knows her South Carolina coast, so much so you feel that you live just down the street and can smell the same marshlands and mud and river. So much research went into the history of Budapest during WWII, and what families endured to survive. And I loved the slow and beautiful love that came to Finn and Ellie.....they deserved their happiness. And little Gigi.....what a character she is. This book is the real thing. Get it now .....you will love it.
Goodreads Description- Thirty-four-year-old Eleanor Murray is consumed with guilt for causing the accident that paralyzed her sister--and for falling in love with her sister's husband. But when her boss offers her a part-time job caring for his elderly aunt, Helena, Eleanor accepts, hoping this good deed will help atone for her mistakes.
On the barrier island of Edisto, Eleanor bonds with Helena over their mutual love of music. Drawing the older woman out of her depression, Eleanor learns of her life in Hungary, with her sister, before and during World War II. She hears tales of passion and heartache, defiance and dangerous deception. And when the truth of Helena and her sister's actions comes to light, Eleanor may finally allow herself to move past guilt and to embrace the song that lies deep in her heart.
I had no idea what to expect with this book and I'd written it off until I saw the rave reviews. Not that I always agree with rave reviews but this time I did. I just didn't like the book description about a woman who feels guilty about paralyzing her sister then she holds a flame for her sister's husband then takes care of an old woman. How depressing. Obviously there was much more.
The premise of the book is a complete train wreck, but it is not a depressing read at all. Eleanor Murray is stuck in her sad life on so many levels, taking caring of her crippled sister Eve and her widowed mother, and she is in love with her sister's husband to boot. She grieves for her father, a shrimp boat captain who died in a storm. He taught her how to play the piano and in her grief for him, she has given up playing. Though life has beat her down, Ellie is still such a wonderful character with a huge capacity to love, shown in the determined way she takes care of everyone around her.
When her divorced boss Finn offers her a part time job taking care of his elderly aunt Helena, it seems the perfect opportunity to improve her lot in life. She quickly becomes a part of this second family, and though she has a great deal of guilt and fear to work through, her second chance at happiness becomes redemptive. My favorite character was Gigi, Finn's daughter, whose leukemia was in remission and had the most amazing love of life. I haven't even touched on the World War Two-era mystery of Aunt Helena and her two sisters, which Ellie helps to solve and heals them both. This tale of two sets of sisters so perfectly described the bond between sisters that it made me cry and wish that I had my own sister to call and say I love you. Karen White, as always, writes hauntingly beautiful stories that will resonate with many readers. I only give this book 4 stars because there are times when I wish the pace of the story would pick up some so I could get to more of the "meat" of the story. Well done Ms. White! 4 stars!
