"She was a cheeky little thing as well as pretty, and he found he liked the combination."

THE STORY: Mary Quinn has been happily living in the home of her sister and brother-in-law for two years. She was welcomed into their home to get her away from her social status seeking, manipulative father who forced her sister into marriage. After four seasons, however, Mary remains unmarried and her father is threatening to take her back. Ready to despair, Mary ends up meeting Edward, Marquis of Woodley. Edward is re-entering society to find a bride. Mary and Edward immediately like one another, but when they are caught in a compromising position, the two are forced to become engaged to be married. The secrets regarding Woodley's first marriage and his wife's death threaten any possibility of Mary and Edward's happiness.

OPINION: This is a good but not great novella. My least favorite of the series, I didn't really connect with Mary who I didn't feel had a great personality to feel engaged with. She felt rather bland compared to other Michaels' heroines including her own sister. My ambivalence toward her impacted my view of the romance.

On the other hand, I really liked Edward's character. He has a complex, angst filled background. Despite that, he is at heart a sweet guy. I especially loved his big family and the difficulties of his relationship with his siblings. I also really liked that he is a take charge character in the story.

This is a case where the novella length hurt the romance. I think that if there had been more scenes with Mary and Edward during their engagement then the crisis that occurs after their engagement party would not have been as disconcerting. I thought the story picked up momentum at that point, but I didn't truly feel the connection between the characters until there was a confrontation between Edward and Mary. Then I felt the connection between them and began to like them as a couple. (There is also a scene with Gemma and Crispin that made me laugh).

This novella goes wrap up the storyline from THE WIDOW WAGER and brings closure to the lingering issues in that novel. One other strength of the novella is that it has a sweet sexiness.

I liked this novella overall and thought that it was a nice wrap up of the Notorious Flynns and a great introduction to the Woodleys.

WORTH MENTIONING: Readers of the Notorious Flynns series will recognize Mary from A WIDOW'S WAGER. Readers get to revisit Gemma and Crispin from that series. Characters from the Woodley family are also introduced and the best part of this book is that I think the story of the next family of characters will be great.

FINAL DECISION: I liked this novella although it is my least favorite of the series. I never felt a deep connection between Mary and Edward and thus I was more interested in the story of the Woodley family than the romance here.

CONNECTED BOOKS: A MARQUIS FOR MARY is the fifth book in the Notorious Flynns series. It can be read as a standalone although it is closely connected with THE WIDOW WAGER and will be better understood after reading that book. A MARQUIS FOR MARY is also a prequel to the Wicked Woodleys series.

STAR RATING: I give this novella 4 stars.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in order to provide an honest review of the book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.

A Marquis For Mary The Notorious Flynns Book 5 edition by Jess Michaels Romance eBooks Reviews

Mary Quinn has been husband hunting for four years. She has been unlucky up to this point. She knows this is her last chance before her greedy father makes her move back into his house. Mary's sisters and their husbands know what kind of nightmare that will be. When she encounters Marquis Woodley. Their connection is intense, but is it enough to garner a husband?

Very solid writing, well plotted and characters you enjoy the moment you meet them. I found this one to be where most young women are at, even today, when they reach a certain age. This book, however, reminds us we should never give up hope. You'll enjoy the way this couple comes together and how well they suit. Get your copy today.

I found no issues.

I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because it was such a fun read. ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~
This is my first read of Jess Michaels' work. The plot was intriguing, but I just never connected with the hero. I felt he was weak when he should have been strong, and his pursuit of Mary wasn't well-grounded. As a heroine, Mary was three-dimensional and her motivations were clear. Love at first meeting is always a fun read. She did have one TSTL kind of moment, but other than that I thought her actions and reactions were well-done. As this was my first try, and probably Edward's motivations and backstory would have helped form his character better for me, I will try another of her books. Her writing is easy and although anachronistic, more set in the era than true to it, that can be a plus for readers who are tired of the often silly posturing our ancestors did at times. My great-grandchildren may wonder why on earth rap music existed, for example.

I do love steamy scenes between the characters, and Ms Michaels delivered that, but a brief "yuck" moment ruined one scene for me. All in all, the love scenes were the best part, and it did have a nice HEA ending.
I think this novella is the crown jewel of this series. This book was a perfect end to this series.

I LOVED Edward and Mary - flat out, no exaggeration - LOVED them. I thought Paul was perfect hero (from No Gentleman for Georgina) Well, he must have taken hero lessons from Edward! Edward was be far one of the best heroes I have ever read. After everything his witch of a late wife out him thru - he deserved to be bitter and fear falling in love. But he wasn't and he didn't - what a refreshing change from the usual once bitten never trust a woman again heroes that are so prevalent in this genre.

And Mary, what a wonderful heroine she was. So sweet, so caring, so loving. You cannot help but love her and root for her happy ending

And I finally got in this book what I had hoped for in Crispin's book. A hero who admits that his love for Mary is much more than it ever was for Alice (may she rot in hell).

For such a short book - this novella really packs a punch, it is well written, potent and had just the right amount of heartache, joy and steam to provide a very quick yet satisfying read. It also nicely sets up the new upcoming series about Edward's family.

I highly recommend this entire series and am really looking forward to Audrey's book Forbidden due out in August!
