Wow! Wow! I read a lot of historical westerns and this story blew me away. Cade Gentry is such a wounded hero and all he's looking for is a little redemption from the things he's done. He rides into Angel's End barely alive and is taken in by the widow of the town sheriff who was gunned down. Leah Findley is an angel if I ever saw one with a heart of gold. She couldn't turn him away. This is such an inspirational story of redemption and finding self-worth. I've read few books with such interesting characters as these. I rooted for these two every step of the way, hoping, praying that they'd somehow get a future together. I recommend this to anyone who loves stories that grip them and won't let them go. I love Cindy Holby's writing because she sprinkles an awareness of God in her stories. A person in today's society can relate to her character's realistic emotions however, there is a touch of morality to aspire to.
love any westerns written by her---she makes the books very entertaining and I just wish she would write another western series
Love the way this author presents her characters!! I think she is a awesome author!! I have several of her books and will purchase more in the near future!
Received in great shap
Cindy Holby has always been one of my favorite writers and I had the pleasure of meeting her several years ago at a book signing in West Virginia. I am so glad she is writing a new series - to date I have read both of her new books and I can hardly wait for new series additions.
I've got a category on my called "Unread" (basically my To Be Read pile), and although all the books are designated by genre, I tend to just grab and go when the mood strikes me. So one evening, I wound up with Angel's End, a western romance.
The book was clearly a western, with a lone man (Cade Gentry)shot and without horse, staggering through the cold as a blizzard approached. He was a man with a questionable past, a man pursued by those wishing to finish the job they'd started, a man near death. Lost and desperate, he does what so many at the end of their strength do, he sends up a prayer. And a miracle occurs. Before him is a fire, food, a kind welcoming man. Cade is fed, his wounds tended by a stranger, a preacher on his way to a new flock at Angel's End. But fate takes an ironic twist. One of Cade's pursuers catches up with him. The preacher, Timothy Kay, is killed immediately and falls face first into the fire, before Cade can kill the gunslinger. Cade is in a bad spot. He's terribly wounded, with a blizzard coming on. He pulls Pastor Kay's body from the fire, changes clothing with him and heads out, hoping the bad guys think the dead man is Cade and give up their search.
Leah is a widow of the town's sheriff who has mourned her husband for four years, and struggled to remain independent as well as care for her young son, Banks. She has space, and needs the money, so she's offered to provide room to the new preacher when he arrives. With winter setting in, no one expects Pastor Kay until spring. One night, with a blizzard starting, Leah and her dog discover a horse, with a fallen man half buried in the snow at the edge of town. He's shot, near death and delirious with fever, and he's dressed like a preacher with a bible and a letter in his pocket introducing him as Pastor Timothy Kay.
You can guess the rest. Leah nurses Cade back to health and finds herself very attracted to this man she thinks is a pastor. In spite of his poor life choices and haunting past, Cade is a good man who helps her fix things around the house, and bonds with her son and her dog. He keeps intending to leave, in spite of his feelings for Leah. He means to end the masquerade and sneak out of town as soon as he can, but he stays. Will the bad guys catch up to him? Can Cade put his past behind him and trust himself to love? Will Leah and the townspeople forgive him his deception?
But of course! This is a love story full of redemption. The book has a strong spiritual theme, which was in keeping with the historical setting. Yes, it's formulaic. Yes, the plot is predictable. Yes, the sex is mild and the characters rather cookie-cutter. But you know what? I loved it. It was gentle and kind. It was like watching an episode of Little House on the Prairie. I knew where it was going, but loved every sweet, gooey bit of it. And in the end I said "Aww[...]"
This is an inspirational read. Cade, a man with a hard past, moves through changes that bring him out the other side to find peace, faith, happiness, a family and love. Leah, helps Cade recover from his physical wounds while also helping him through changes that will bring them both together. Once his past is out in the open, Cade and Leah face their future. The characters draw you into the story. The animals make you smile. The message is strong and timeless.
